Marie Robinson

Marie has drawn, painted, and ‘made’ all her life though she initially studied Chemistry at King’s College, London on leaving school. It was while bringing up her two children that she finally found the opportunity to develop her artistic passion.

Marie studied with the Open College of the Arts as a mature student and then undertook an Access to Art & Design course at North Oxfordshire School of Art, Banbury. After successfully completing this she studied for a degree in Fine Art with De Montfort University, graduating in 2002 with a BA First Class Hons. During, and after, this time Marie also worked part-time as a picture researcher and librarian in a photographic library.

Her work is exhibited regularly, nationally, and internationally, in commercial galleries and at the Affordable Art Fairs. She has had work selected for The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, The Lynn Painter Stainers Prize Exhibition, The National Open Art Competition, The Society of Women Artists and The Royal Society of Marine Artists.

Notably Marie’s work has also been selected for the ING Discerning Eye on seven different occasions, winning the Staff Purchase Prize in 2014 and she has had work selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2023, 24 & 25. She was featured on BBC’s The One Show in June ’25 when they came to film her at her studio and interviewed her live at the Royal Academy with Nick Grimshaw!

Marie’s work is contemporary realism in oils, grounded in traditional painting techniques and supported by meticulous observational drawing. She utilises a representational style to encapsulate the essence of her subjects, while preserving the tactile quality of oil paint on a planar surface. She is particularly noted for her still life compositions, portraits of everyday items in thoughtful, often whimsical, tableaus that evoke a sense of life, past or present

Marie has been based in Oxfordshire for 40 years and is delighted to be a member of Oxford Art Society. She paints full time working from her studio in the lovely village of Turville near Henley, where the six studios at ‘Turville Studios’ hold regular open days.
