Sarah Wills-Brown

Profile picture

Sarah’s work explores the transient dynamics of shadow within architectural environments and the symbolic and metaphorical narratives that these shadows evoke within the individual.

Exploring the built environment on a sunny day, ensures Sarah is able to capture crisp, dramatic shadows which echo the shadows from a childhood spent in Western Australia. These shaped shadow forms then become a set of graphic motifs, which are manually or digitally repeated or layered into abstract compositions, as wall based works. These evolve into sculptures which slot together or stand in rows, hand or laser cut in wood, Perpex, metal or card. Their surfaces create a space enlivened by glimpses of colour, lines, traces of materials and pattern details, forming both visual and sensory memories of the time she has spent in these spaces created and altered by light.

With a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design and a PGCE, both from Middlesex University, Sarah has taught Art and Design in London and Oxfordshire since 1993. In 2019, she took a break from teaching to return to full time education, graduating in 2020 with an MFA in Fine Art (Dist) from Oxford Brookes University. Sarah now combines her practice with teaching art part time.

Sarah is happy to accept commissions.
