Ruth Swain
I am an artist based in Oxfordshire. I work in oil, watercolour and pastel, painting mainly from life.
Having worked in London, Hong Kong and New York as an art director and illustrator, I use visual stories and word play to inspire my work. This helps me to create a dialogue between the sitter and the viewer.
I graduated from The Art Academy London in Dec 2020 with a distinction and since then I have been selected for the Liberty Arts Prize and shortlisted for 'The Signature Arts Prize 2021. Previously I won 'The Readers Award' in Artists and Illustrators Magazine (Artist of the year 2017) with 'They said I used to look like her' exhibited in the Mall Gallery. My paintings have been exhibited in several major galleries including the Menier Gallery, Mall Galleries, the Whitechapel Gallery, Manchester, The RBSA Open Exhibition 2017, and The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour 2019.Newington Gallery 2020. I currently have a painting on show in the Ashmoleum museum and in an exhibition 'FOR WOMEN BY WOMEN' in www.ronapaintinggallery.com in Oxford.
My new series of work are still-life paintings based on the domestic, highlighting the invisible jobs mainly done by women that often go unnoticed. Elevating the ordinary and showing beauty in everyday life.
