I work in oil and watercolour and my paintings are mostly landscapes, seascapes and still lifes from direct observation.
I also paint 'narrative' compositions, where the subject of the work hints at a bigger story that is left largely to the imagination of the viewer. The starting point for these paintings is usually a mundane object or scene, such as a washing line, shed or bus stop, around which the wider 'plot' is gradually developed.
I mostly favour a muted palette, using the quieter tones to offer interesting ways of depicting and exploring the shifting balance between light, shade and mood.
