My approach to painting is largely playful and intuitive. I always start with loose charcoal or graphite sketches of a scene or setting that has sparked an emotional connection. More considered compositional drawings are then reworked on a board or canvas.  I layer and scrape back the paint, moving between moments of calm to wild scoring and mark-making.

I am striving to capture the light and essence of my subject, whether a seascape or still life, exploring abstraction and expression through layers of colour whilst aiming to create a calm “stillness” in the finished piece. I love the possibilities of charcoal and paint and being absorbed in the creative process.
