Ruth Swain

Ruth Swain works in oil, watercolour and pastel, painting from life and photos.

Having worked in London, Hong Kong and New York as an art director and illustrator in advertising, she uses visual stories and word play to inspire her work. 

Works include still-life paintings based on the domestic, highlighting invisible jobs that are mainly done by women and go unnoticed, such as putting away the iron, replacing the loo roll, picking up dirty cups, the list is endless. Elevating the ordinary and showing beauty in everyday life. Portrait commissions  where the subject has a book of choice in the painting, revealing a little more about the sitter.

Recent successes: Liberty Arts Prize and a commission for their permanent gallery (20 Fenchurch Street, London) Shortlisted  'The Signature Arts Prize 2021,  Finalist, The Hari Arts Prize. Finalist Holly Bush prize, Shortlisted Jacksons Prize, Portrait Artist Of The Year 2021.

Works shown in Mall Galleries, RI, Menier Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, Manchester, RBSA Gallery, Highgate Gallery, Lauderdale House and Newington Gallery, several Oxford galleries and Ashmoleum Museum. Winner of the Readers Award in Artists and Illustrators Magazine.
