Marie Robinson

Profile picture

My work is contemporary realism in oils rooted in the tradition of representational painting & underpinned by close observational drawing. I am most known for my still lives & am inspired by the history & associations inherent in ordinary objects & materials. Painting directly from life I employ a representational style to evoke the qualities of the subjects I chose, without losing the physicality of oil paint on a flat surface.
Since the beginning of the pandemic I now often include flora in my compositions & have also returned to exploring the moods & weather of the British landscape as subject, particularly that around my rural studio. I painted five portraits for the Portraits for NHS Heroes initiative & have one featured in the resulting book.
On leaving school I initially studied for a Chemistry degree before having my two children. Having drawn & painted all my life it was only while bringing up my children that I found the flexibility to develop further artistically & gained a BA(Hons) Fine Art in 2002 as a ‘mature’ student!
My work has since been exhibited widely nationally & internationally, notably being selected for the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition on 7 occasions & winning the ING Staff Purchase Prize in 2014. I was delighted to become a member of Oxford Art Society this year.
Living in Oxfordshire for 36 years I now work from my studio in Turville near Henley on Thames where we open regularly to visitors on the first Sunday of the month.

Marie is happy to accept commissions.
